AUSTRALIA Record levels but shaky

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed at record levels, pushed up by strong support for blue chip industrials and mining stocks. However, brokers said that although the market had begun strongly, prices were shakier as more stock came into the markets in afternoon trading. Some brokers suggested a downward correction was imminent. National turnover was a moderate 134 million shares worth sAustl94 million with rises outnumbering falls five to three. Private Blood Bank shares traded strongly, jumping 350 c to 1350 on turnover of 200,000 shares. On the industrial board Lend Lease improved 30c to 1160 ahead of the release of its interim profits, Arnotts jumped 10c to 560 and Bell Group 15c to 1055, but Woolworths lost 10c to 350 and FAI the same to 980. ■Banking stocks were mixed in a narrow range. Among media issues News Corp finished unchanged at 2350, Fairfax added 10c to 1660, Herald and Weekly Times dipped 40c to 1830 and. Queensland Press put on 50c to 2200 c. BHP was unchanged at 1045 on turnover of 1.3 million and Bell Resources lost 10c to 460. Western Mining was the pick of the mining stocks, advancing 22c to 600, while CRA lost 10c to 704. Elsewhere, Kidston put on 10c to 770 and Emperor 40c to 720. Placer Pacific shed 8c to 242 and Sons of Gwalia 10c to 840. In the oil and gas sector, Santos fell 6c to 400 and Ampol Exploration 10c to 340, while Oilsearch added 6c to 95.
