Comfortable win for Avonside over rival
Avonside I comfortably accounted for nearest rival Riccarton I in the final round of the summer inter-club table tennis competition to easily take out the A grade title. Karl Entwistle gave the main impetus to Avonside's success and he looked very sharp while maintaining his unbeaten record. He has developed a more aggressive attacking game recently and should be to the forefront of the New Zealand junior ranks this winter. His support in the winning side was provided by his brother, Darrin, John Richards and Tim Hanrahhn. • The Avonside club also clinched second spot as its No. 2 team, led by Les Stewart with three singles wins, just bested Linwood six matches to five. Bill Stewart won all of his matches to carry Riccarton to an upset win over Avonside IH which, however, should still win the lower section
which has one round to play. Denis Kalin had a welcome return from injury remaining unbeaten for Linwood, which beat the Avonside fourth side eight matches to three. The promising junior, Karen Hines, played well in the B grade to spoil David Prisk’s hitherto unbeaten season on the final match.
