Estonian anniversary

Sir,—The “independence” which Domingo Paulo Baron (February 17) claims that Estonia declared on February 24, 1918, was at a time when Estonia was occupied by the German Army and the German Government was imposing the harshly onerous terms of the BrestLitovsk Treaty on the Soviet Republic. The Estonian people enthusiastically supported the Russian Revolution. After Germany’s collapse in November, 1918, the Estonians again proclaimed their country a socialist republic. The British Navy and Finnish White Guards overthrew this republic and imposd an antisocialist government on the Estonian people. On June 21, 1940,

Estonian workers rose

against their fascist government. On July 21, 1940, the State Duma proclaimed Estonia a Soviet Socialist Republic and applied to join the Soviet Union, a request granted on August 6, 1940. The Estonian people will not be celebrating February 24 this year. Their celebrations of Soviet Army Day on February 23 will expunge their unhappy memories of February 24, 1918.—— Yours, etc.,

M. CREEL. February 18, 1987
