Park still ahead in club cricket championship

Lancaster Park met its first setback in the Trustbank Cup limited-over competition in the seventh round of the first grade competition yesterday, but it is still well placed to win the championship with two rounds remaining.

Park must have felt pleased with its total of 244 off 50 overs against BurnsideWest University, but its bowlers came under similar assault and Burnside-West won with 38 balls to spare.

The news for Park improved though when the second-placed St Albans succumbed to Sydenham at Hagley Oval. Sydenham, too, won comfortably with overs to spare after St Albans laboured to 143 for nine.

Wins by Sydenham, Old Collegians, Burnside-West University and Riccarton enabled them to all join St Albans in second place on eight points. Old Collegians easily overtook East-Shirley’s target in the forty-second over. Riccarton, the only team to bat first and win, scored too many runs for Woolston W.M.C. and Marist, with a fine opening by Greg Curtain and Justin Boyle, and stand for the fourth-wicket between Boyle and Greg Hills, paced itself nicely to head off Old Boys in a late finish at Hagley Oval. Chris Flanagan (Old Boys), with four sixes in his 73, and David Hartshorn (Riccarton), with 78 led the individual scoring. Justin Boyle (Marist) scored his third half-century of the week-end and Andrew Sherwood (Burnside-West), Garry Hooper (East-Shirley) Gary Gardner (Woolston) and John Radovonich (Lancaster Park) also exceeded 50. Bowlers were worked hard, but Garry Macdonald (Marist) and David Stead (Riccarton) both claimed four wickets without conceding many runs.
