U-Bix Cup on the move again?
PA Rotorua The U-Bix Cup may soon be on the move again after challenger Hawke’s Bay enjoyed an excellent day in Rotorua yesterday against Bay of Plenty. Hawke’s Bay dismissed the cupholder for 199 for a first innings lead of 20 runs. At stumps at the end of the second day the challenger was 87/4 in its second innings. Medium pacer Tony Sail was Hawke’s Bay’s trump card, taking 5/73 from 27.5 overs. In a disastrous pre-lunch session Bay of Plenty lost its first six wickets for 58, with only Northern Districts’ representative David White reaching double figures. However, a 77-run partnership between John Derrick
and Roger Bradley gave the holder renewed hope of a first-innings lead. Derrick went on to reach 65, including three towering 6s, before being bowled by the offspinner Stuart Duff.
Bruce Mclntosh struck a quick 29 to put Bay of Plenty within sight of the target, but was caught from a mistimed sweep.
Bay of Plenty now has to win the match outright on the last day tomorrow to retain the cup. Scores:
Hawke’s Bay 219 (S. Briasco 47, M. Greatbach 45, S. Duff 25; J. Derrick 4/87, B. Ward 3/40, D. Beard 2/45) and 87/4 (G. Smidt 23; M. McKinnon 3/11). Bay of Plenty 199 (J. Derrick 65, R. Bradley 31, B. Mclntosh 29; A. Sail 5/3, S. Duff 3/55, S. Lowrie 2/31).
