Mackay outshines Norman
NZPA-AAP Melbourne Perth’s Roger Mackay, yesterday outshone the world’s No. 1 player, Greg Norman, to capture the Victorian Open and his first major victory. Mackay’s one shot victory over Norman at Kingston Heath ended the British Open champion’s ambition of holding all the mainland State golf titles at once. Mackay shrugged off the pressure of playing alongside Norman <o fire 73-68 in the final, two
rounds yesterday to finish 11 under the card on 277. Norman, however, was threatening to the very end. He birdied the final hole to surrender by the barest of margins, also firing a final round 68. Scotland’s Sam Torrance, the pacesetter early in the last round, crumbled over the homeward nine but managed to keep a grip on outright third spot at seven under the card after a disappointing two over par 74 final round.
