Romney two-tooths exceed $30

The rise in popularity of the strong-woolled Romney sheep showed through clearly at the Oxford ewe fair yesterday where many pens of Romney two-tooths exceeded $3O.

Bidding was keen for all types of Romneys and the medium-sized two-tooths at $22 to $27 sold particularly well.

The top price of $39, paid for a pen of Romneys from Highgate Pastoral Company, Horrelville, was $9 ahead of last year’s leading sale. Two other lines of big-framed, woolly Romneys from B. Petrie, Woodend, and Withinlea Farm, Woodend, made $3B.

Other strong-woolled breeds and the finer Halfbreds generally sold between $l9 to $29, with some sales of light sheep at $l6 to $l9.

The demand for old ewes was very sound, and once again the medium to lighter types attracted excellent competition from a big gallery of buyers, in contrast to last year, when light ewes were very difficult to quit. Early-shorn annual draft Halfbreds from the Lands and Survey Department, Lees Valley, reached $24.25 ($2O last year) and another regular market-leader, K. M. Wells, Moana Downs, received $23.75 for four-year Romneys. The yarding contained more than 23,000 sheep, including 9270 two-tooths (7141 last year) and 14,100 adults (16,050).
