Wool prices up at Napier

PA Napier Wool prices continued, their upward trend at the combined auction sale held at Napier yesterday. The sale was made up of 4198 bales from Wellington, 12,246 from Napier, 5907 from Auckland, and 7748 from Wanganui. The combined offering comprised 15 per cent fleece, 4 per cent cotts, 28 per cent secondshear, 40 per cent lambs’ wool, and 7 per cent clothing oddments.

There was a limited selection of better-styled fleece, which was mainly good to average and average, the official report said.

Cotts were mostly average to good style, 75mm to 125 mm and shorter. Lambs* wool was mainly good to average style

down to poor style, 25mm to 75mm to bulk 75mm in length. Compared with the last sale in Christchurch on February 13, all fleece was in sellers’ favour, cotts were 2.5 per cent dearer. Competition at the sale was keen from all sections of the trade. Main buyers were China, the Continent, and Eastern Europe, with good support from New Zealand mills.

Wool Board support was limited to coarser lambs’ wools, with support lessening as the sale progressed. The greasy market indicator was 412 c and clean, 554 c. This was a combined figure of the sales in Napier and Dunedin. The Napier prices were slightly stronger than Dunedin in most wool types. x
