Abortion service use refused
PA Nelson The Nelson Area Health Board has decided not to perform abortions on. women referred from its West Coast counterpart. A letter from the chairman of the West Coast Hospital Board asked Nelson board members to consider the prospect of official access for West Coast women to the Nelson abortion service. The West Coast board
had narrowly voted not to provide an abortion service because of financial difficulties in providing one and because of opposition in principle' by some board members to abortion. The board would also approach the Canterbury Hospital Board to perform some of the 75 to 100 abortions required by West Coast women each year.
