Merger proposal worries parents

A proposal to merge Van Asch College for the Deaf and McKenzie Residential School for maladjusted children is worrying many parents. A meeting will be held today between representatives of the Education Department, the schools, and parents. An 884-signature petition is also being sent to the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall. The petition’s organiser, Ms Beverley Gillard, said many deaf people and parents of deaf children strongly opposed such a move because the specialised education needs of the two groups were very different.

The recommendations were based on economics, without regard for the needs of deaf pupils, she asserted. The recommendation to site the two schools on one campus is contained in a draft review on special education ■ prepared for the Education Department last year. Submissions on the review closed yesterday. A number of submissions concerning Van Asch College and McKenzie Residential School had been received, and would be looked at “very, very closely,” said a spokesman for the Department’s Special Education Division, Mr Ashley Milne.
