Prison for slashing tyres

Twelve months imprisonment was ordered for a man who, in December, slashed 14 tyres on 11 vehicles causing damage set at $1579. In imposing sentence in the District Court yesterday on David John Gay, Judge Frampton said there was no possibility of compensation being made.

He said he had to consider the public interest and the persons who had suffered by Gay’s offending. •

Gay, aged 23, unemployed (Mr J. S. Halls), was earlier convicted on 11 charges of intentionally damaging car tyres on December 17, three charges of using threatening language on January 5, unlawfully interfering with a car, and attempting to steal money from it, on January 11.

Mr Halls said the damage charges were committed while his client was under the influence of drugs. Gay told the police he was looking for money in a parked car because he

had not been given any by the Social Welfare Department INDECENCY OFFENCES A man who indecently exposed himself to five different women with intent to insult or offend them was convicted and remanded to February 24 for sentence. The complainant, whose name was earlier suppressed on the application of the police, had been a seller of drugs for a considerable period, said Mr Fitzgibbon. He also said that prior to the visit by his client, the complainant had earlier been beaten up by some street kids. - Heffernan- had ; assaulted the complainant while he was in bed, at 6.30 a.m., after a dispute over change due to him for the payment of drugs. Although not admitted, the complainant required hospital treatment for his cuts and bruises. PERIODIC DETENTION A beneficiary who told police when stopped in Woodham Road that he carried a dagger with a 12.5 cm blade in case “somebody wanted to give

him a go,” was sentenced, to periodic detention for six months. f ‘ David George' Bowring, aged 20 (Mr Wi F. Morgan), committed the offence on December 27. The Judge ordered that the dagger be destroyed. Bowring also appeared for sentence on a charge of breaching a periodic detention order. ‘ ■ ESCAPERS tTwo men recaptured yesterday after escaping from Paparua Prison-on Monday, - each had three months added .to tfelr existing prison terms. F. Peter Geoffrey Whall, aged - 27, and 1 Stephen John i Watson, aged VJ3, walked away from a work party;. They were reaptured yesterday ‘ morntag atan address in Papanul. Whall said " |he just wanted “a .bit* of freedom.” Watson said he had heard while in prison that a man with whom he left some personal belongings was leaving Christchurch and that he just wanted to find out what was to happen to this property.
