Loan "attempt at self-help’
PA Auckland Maori self-determina-tion should be supported, says the Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Wally Hirsh. Addressing the Remuera Rotary Club, Mr Hirsh urged members to understand what was behind the Maori Affairs Department loan negotiations. The loan was an attempt by the Maori leadership to become involved in major self-help, he said. “Maori moves for selfdetermination should have our support. They are not separatist ... Tribalism after all is
simply the social and economic planning unit, organised at a very manageable level. “Never was the time more urgent for us to understand and support Maoridom needs.” Mr Hirsh said bad publicity from gang violence should be kept in perspective. “Gang members are a tiny minority of our society ... ■ Let us not carry it over to the whole Maori community.” He said this Waitangi Day should be seen as a covenant of partnership, But some would not see it as a day for celebration.
