Lester Piggott enters Genghis for U.S. Triple Crown
NZPA-Reuter Kentucky The English trainer, Lester Piggott, has entered Genghis, one of his best performers last year, for the American Triple Crown. Genghis is one of 398 three-year-olds nominated for the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
A special effort to attract European-based horses this year brought seven foreign nominations including highly-regarded Bengal Fire, winner of the Royal Lodge Stakes at
Ascot last year. The colt is one of three entries from the Newmarket trainer, Clive Brittain, who saddled last year’s Kentucky Derby runner-up, Bold Arrangement.
This year’s Triple Crown carries a $5 million bonus for any horse . winning all three races.
Capote, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November and a son of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, is the most prominent American entry.
