Sumner shows suburban batting strength

The first round of tne senior suburban cricket competition last Sunday resulted in wins for Hornby, Sumner and Merivale-Papanui. Boon Hay drew a bye. It will play in Sunday’s semifinals.

The highest team score of the day was Sumner’s 280. It beats Southern Districts.

Sumner won the toss and sent Southern Districts in to bat. Southern Districts scored an impressive 278 for six from the 40 overs. Glen Black, of Southern Districts scored 89, the best individual total. His innings included six sixes.

Sumner’s target was thought to be out of range, but a determined effort produced a cliff-hanging finish.

Dean Palmer and Kevin Williams, the openers, reached 53 and 27 respectively.

Both players required runners as a result of knee injuries. This caused confusion at the wicket on occasions. Both batsmen were dismissed through run outs. Charlie Cross (not out 74) and Cyril Grimmer (31) steered Sumner to victory. Grimmer also needed a runner after injuring his foot while fielding.

Sumner’s win came with two balls to spare. At Edgar MacKintosh Park, New Brighton, batting first, steadily lost wickets to be dismissed by Merivale-Papa-nui for 170 after 39 overs. New Brighton benefited

from 35 extras. The home side won by three wickets. Kevin Collins (71) and the New Brighton captain, Derek Burrell (53) were the top scorers. Ken Stagg, with 35 and three for 39 shared the “Player-of-the-Day” award with Collins. Chasing Hornby’s 160 for nine, Heathcote tumbled out for 95. The player to shine in the match between last year’s finalists was Hornby’s Trevor Flutey. He set the champion team up with a tidy 35. Results:Sumner 280/9 (C. Cross 74 not out, D. Palmer 53, S.
