Drought fails to stunt standard of Chch gardens

Judges of the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s summer competition found gardens to be of a very high standard this year in spite of the dry conditions. The society’s secretary, Mr Tom Clark, said after the judging that the competition had attracted more than 100 entries, more than last year. Canterbury gardeners were lucky with the artesian water supplies which helped them to combat the effects of the drought, said Mr Clark.

The judges were impressed by the variation and the new types of plants being introduced into gardens, he said.

The winners of the premier award, the John Oliver Memorial Trophy and R. T. Toswill Memorial Trophy, were Mr and Mrs N. Jones, of 23 Birkenhead Road, Avonhead.
