P.N.G. considers Soviets
NZPA-Reuter Port Moresby Papua New Guinea is considering a fishing deal with the Soviet Union, Government officials said yesterday. An official paper setting out possible gains and problems from such a deal will be presented soon to the Cabinet, they said. The Soviet Union signed a SUSI.S million fishing deal with Vanuatu last week, gaining the first shore facilities in the
South Pacific for its tuna fleet. The Soviet Union had not made any formal approaches to Papua New Guinea, officials said. The first secretary of the Soviet Embassy in Canberra, Yuri Belobrov, said after the Vanuatu agreement that Moscow would welcome similar deals with other island nations. Papua New Guinea’s leading politicians are divided on commercial links with the Soviet Union.
