Study looks at disease
PA Dunedin An independent consultant will make an in-depth study of the Foveaux Strait oyster beds, which were closed early last year by disease. Mr Bob Street, a retired scientist of the Ministry of Fisheries, would investigate the quality and quantity of the oysters for the oyster boat owners’ com-
mittee, said its chairman, Mr Cliff Skeggs. Mr Skeggs said the first stage of the study was expected to start soon. The second stage would begin in the middle of the season, aind the third and final stage towards the end of the season. . The Foveaux Strait fishery was closed on July 27, 1986, by the Ministry after
scientists from the Fisheries Research Division examined Bluff oysters in Wellington, and identified a parasite similar to Bonamia ostreae, which in recent years has caused extensive depletion of flat oysters in Europe. The closing of the fishery came five weeks before the season was due to end.
