Fire destroys ’copter

A helicopter burst into flames and was destroyed by fire soon after landing at Woodbank station, near Hanmer Springs last evening.

The two men who had just flown in the helicopter, Messrs William Atkinson and John Beattie, were about to refuel when the fire started.

“We were standing near it and saw flames,” said

Mr Atkinson, who owned the helicopter for his personal use.

Both men walked away from the blaze to call the Fire Brigade. “It was no big thing — there was no explosion,” said Mr Atkinson. Constable Peter Gilfedder, of Hanmer, said that by the time the brigade

arrived the fire had almost burnt itself out. Woodbank station is about skm from Hanmer Springs.

Several blank cartridges used for propelling deer nets exploded but were not a danger, he said. Nobody was hurt in the fire.

An inspector of air accidents will investigate the cause of the fire.
