Woman injured in Auckland city fire
PA Auckland Firemen say three young people rescued yesterday from their blazing Elliott Street “home” were lucky to survive the inferno. Firemen plucked two teenagers from the roof of an adjoining building, and a former fire-fighter used his wits to stop a young woman jumping off a ledge. The woman was in pain from a pin in her leg which had given way when she jumped from the burning building on to a ledge. The rescuer calmed her for 20 minutes before ambu-
lance staff arrived. At least two other people plunged into the heat when they heard the cries of the youngsters, but were beaten back by the dense smoke. As fire crews tried to restrict damage to the Civic Chambers and another building, the MidCity Cinema -Centre was evacuated. Dozens of police kept holiday crowds back. Four ambulances stood by. The girl injured in jumping from the burning building was taken to Auckland Hospital, but no other casualties were reported.
