Ideas in education

Sir,—ln reply to V. H. Anderson (January 12) I agree that hard work and continual endeavour are viry necessary. More will be achieved through persistence and • determination than through innate intelligence or creativity, although this does not in any way exclude the latter areas. I would put. it more strongly than V. H. Anderson. More than anything else, it. is self-discipline and effort that enables a person to go to work for 40 years, that enables the family unit to be, held together, that determines success in many areas. It is for these reasons that I feel that a system which only relates to one aspect of the child’s growth is psychologically damaging. V. H. Anderson does me a disservice — I am not a product of the American system. My views have been formed by over 20 years in education, nearly all in the United Kingdom. The greatest influence on my thinking was taking large classes in the East End of London and the industrial north of England.—Yours, etc, (Dr) DAVID MOLLET. January 12, 1987.
