Distemper virus kills two pups

The death of two puppies from the viral disease canine distemper reinforces the need for animal vaccinations, says the president of the Canterbury Branch of the Veterinary ‘ Association, Mr Alex Hayward. The puppies, from an Amberley property, had to be destroyed last week after developing serious nervous system disorders. Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed distemper, a highly contagious disease. Mr Hayward said vaccinations for distemper had made it a very’ uncommon disease today, and cases were seldom seen. “It’s usually fatal or leaves the dog with chronic respiratory problems,” he said. “The case reinforces the need to follow a complete vaccination programme with dogs.” He said the case had affected no other animals, and he know of no others in the area.
