Tanker attacked

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo A Liberian-registered tanker the Atlantic Dignity was hit by a missile in the southern Gulf yesterday, Japanese shipping sources said.

The sources, quoting a report from a Japanese vessel in the area, said the 89,935-ton tanker, which was sailing from Kuwait to Italy, was attacked by an unidentified gunboat.

The tanker continued sailing under its own power and did not seem to be on fire, the sources quoted reports from the Japanese vessel as saying. The attack was witnessed

from the Japanese ship. The missile hit the wing tank on the portside of the tanker, the source said.

The gunboat was seen heading for Bandar Abbas, in Iran, after the strike. The 88,260-ton Pana-manian-flag World Dawn and the 238,770-ton Japan-ese-flag Cosmo Jupiter were hit late last week by missiles believed fired by Iranian warships, after loading at Kuwaiti ports. Shipping sources in Kuwait said Iran had been singling out vessels sailing to or from Kuwait since September.
