Call to promote the Pill

PA Wellington The positive aspects of the contraceptive pill, the intra-uterine device and the contraceptive hormone injection Depo Provera needed to be promoted, says the Family Planning Association’s medical director, Dr Margaret Sparrow. Adverse publicity on the contraceptives was putting off women who would find the methods ideal, she said. Dr Sparrow'is the only Wellington member of a new Auckland-based group of women doctors called Contraceptive Choice.

“Whenever the media run a scare story on the pill, sterilisation, I.U.D.’s or whatever, it does cause a lot of concern in patients. There has been a really big drop off in 1.U.D.5,” she said.
