Moa skeleton found
PA Nelson National Museum staff from Wellington have flown to Nelson to inspect the well-preserved skeleton of a moa., The remains were discovered by a party of Canterbury cavers explor-
ing the cave system surrounding 2000 metre high Mount Owen. Their radio message reporting the discovery of the moa’s remains has resulted in a scientific examination by staff from the National Museum, Wellington. A team of museum staff flew to .Mount Owen to investigate the cavers’ find and study the surroundings. The bones formed a well-pre-served skeleton. Moas became extinct about 400 years ago after being ruthlessly hunted by the early Polynesian settlers. Similar remains have already been discovered in caves near Karamea. The bones from Mount Owen will be flown back to the National Museum for further examination.
