Australian duo put England on ropes

By

ROSS MULLINS

of AAP NZPA-AAP Sydney Australia’s magnificent duo — the near double century maker, Dean Jones, and the debut test all-rounder, Peter Taylor — had England on the ropes by the end of the second day of the fifth test at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday. Jones resumed on his overnight 119 and stayed unbeaten by innings end with 184. On reaching 150 Jones became only the eleventh Australian to achieve that tally in Anglo-Australian tests at the,S.C.G. He joined the ranks of the immortals with the highest scores on the S.C.G. —a list led by Sid Barnes and Don Bradman (234), Sid Gregory (201), Stan McCabe (187 n. 0.) and Victor Trumper . (185 n. 0.). Taylor helped in a stubborn tail-end resistance then grabbed the prize scalps of Allan Lamb and lan Botham just before stumps. .

At the close of play, England was reeling at 132 for five in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 343, with David Gower on 62 and the wicket-keeper, Jack Richards, eight. But many good judges had Gower as Taylor’s third victim, leg before wicket in the last over before stumps. Taylor trapped Gower with his arm ball on the second delivery of his eighth over. Gower looked well and truly gone leg before wicket but umpire Steve Randell thought otherwise. Taylor said: "I heard later, off the centre, that it was a good decision, although I was confident he was out "But I’m not going to criticise the umpires — they are doing a good job.” Jones appeared to be headed towards his second double century in just under four months — his first was an epic 210 in the. tied test at Madras in India.
