O’Grady meets destiny

NZPA-AP Los Angeles Mac O’Grady survived an erratic putting effort to score a one-shot victory over Rick Fehr in the Tournament of Champions golf tournament at Carlsbad.

Greg Norman, who won the British Open and dominated world golf last year, bogeyed the final hole for a 71 and tied for third at 280.

O’Grady scored his second professional triumph with a 278 total, 10 under par, after a final round 71.

The victory was worth SUS9O,OOO ($171,000) from the total purse of SUSSOO,OOO ($950,000) and, O’Grady said, enabled him “to shake hands with destiny.” Fehr, a rookie, aged 24, in this event that brings togehter only the winners of 1986 P.G.A. tour titles, hung on to take second, tying with Mark Calcavecchia, who had a closing 70.
