Otago by an innings

I>A Hamilton Otago consigned Northern Districts to an innings defeat with a day to spare in the Shell Trophy cricket match at Hamilton’s Seddon Park. Apart from the first hour, when it looked as though Northern Districts’ decision to bowl first on winning the toss may pay some dividend, Otago was firmly In control. Forced to follow on after being dismissed for 153, Northern Districts was all out for 145 and lost by an innings and 37 runs. Untidy bowling to match some ragged fielding helped Otago to 335 for six wickets declared, an imposing total to which the lefthander, Bruce Blair, contributed 101. An unbeaten 82 by Derek Walker, a solid 46 by Kevin Burns and a lively 38 by John Wilson also weighed heavily in the Otago cause. Blair was dropped, on 43, off the bowling of the young paceman, Brian Barrett, as was the opener, Ken Rutherford. Barrett deserved better figures than two for 68, as did the medium pacer,

Tony Boyle, brought in at short notice for his first class debut. He struck a good length straight away, persevered throughout his 25 overs and finished with one for 71 after two catches off his bowling were put down toward the end of the innings. Neil Mallender, who obtained more from the pitch than from any of the other faster bowlers in the match, spearheaded the Otago attack with four for 14 in the first innings. OTAGO First innings K. R.
