Canterbury needs nine wickets

PA Auckland About the only thing certain on the last day of the Auckland-Canterbury Shell Trophy match at Eden Park today is that there will be, weather permitting, a result

with wickets falling regularly the match is already three-quarters over and today Auckland needs 224 runs with nine second innings wickets standing for the win. Canterbury was dismissed for 186 on Saturday and Auckland, after a dreadful start, finished at 154 yesterday. Shortly before stumps yesterday the Canterbury second innings finished at 197, leaving Auckland at least six overs and a possible 122 today to get 230 runs. By stumps Auckland were 6 for one wicket. Of the batsmen only John Wright (72), Stuart Gillespie (73) Paul McEwan (56) and Vaughan Brown (53) made any impression.

John Bracewell was Auckland’s main hero with two marathon bowling spells. In the first innings he bowled 27 overs (16 maidens) for five wickets at a cost of 31 runs, and in the second bowled 50 overs (17 maidens) for five wickets at a cost of 93 runs.

In the last act this evening Richard Hadlee had the new Auckland opener Rob MacKinlay lbw — rather typical for this was the eleventh lbw decision of the match so far. The cascade of wickets began in the very first over of the match on Saturday when, after Canterbury won the toss and batted, Anup Nathu was

lbw in Danny Morrison’s first over. Canterbury was soon 11 for two but the flow of wickets checked while John Wright, who finished with 72, and Paul McEwan, much more vigorous with his 56, added 83 for the third wicket. But once McEwan was out, Bracewell’s first victim, the wickets began to tumble again and the next highest score, of 15, came from the No. 11 batsman, Stuart Roberts. Bracewell finished the day with the astonishing figures of five wickets for 31 from 27 overs.- Morrison was sharp and accurate to finish with three for. 24 from 14 overs. But Roberts and Hadlee were even sharper and more dangerous as they ripped out the first five Auckland first innings wickets for 28 runs. CANTERBURY First innings G. Wright c Crowe b Bracewell 72 A.
