The trailing yacht has the chance to take an advantage if he can stick dose to his opponent approaching a mark. In (A) if the leading beat is Mt clear of his opponent, and the following yacht has established an overlap within two boat lengths of the mark, the leading boat must give the yacht inside it room to round the buoy. In (B) obtaining buoy room at the mark often gives the following boat a chance to break through to lead. Manoeuvring to get buoy room is an important part of tactics when nearing a mark.
