Last year’s Max Harvey Auckland Cup winner, Comedy Lad, is a notable omission from next month’s Lion Brown InterDominion Championships at Addington Raceway. Nominations for the series, including the $2OO entrance fee for pacers and $75 for trotters, must be accepted by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club by 3 p.m., on Monday. New Zealand’s leading trainers, Roy and Barry Purdon, will be represented only by the in-form Luxury Liner at the championships, Comedy Lad and the stable’s leading trotting mare, Indette, will stay at home. “He doesn’t drive that good at Addington,” said Roy Purdon of Comedy Lad yesterday. “With those mobiles down there, he is likely to get in to bother. I had a talk with Max (Harvey) and we’ve decided against it.”
Luxury Liner has had a few easy days since his 1:59.1 mile win at Cambridge on January 2, while Comedy Lad has also been freshened, having had 10 days off, before the pair resumed training for the $300,000 Harness World Auckland Cup on January 30.
