Aust. returns to highs

NZPA-AAP Sydeny Australian share markets closed at record levels as investors returned to the market after taking profits on Thursday. Brokers reported gains across the boards, with selected industrial, resource and gold stocks attracting the most support Larry Adler’s FAI Insurances made the strongest advance following disclosure of its 7.4 per cent stake inU.K. merchant bank Hill Samuel Group pic. Elsewhere, Bond Corp advanced 9c to 285 on heavy turnover, Boral rose 12c to 470, Woolworths 10 to 400, Coles Myer 6 to 248 and ICI 10 to 340. BHP finished 4c up at 928 after reaching 932, with 1.4 million shares traded. CSR put on 8 to 364 and Peko Wallsend 6 to 620. Elders IXL gained 10c to 485 while Bell Resources was unchanged at 470. First Investor Resources rose 10c to 80 as 4 million shares traded in a special sale at 72c. On the mining boards, Aberfoyle jumped 50c to 1200 and Barrack Mines 70 to 1080, Kidston rose 26 to 790 and Poseidon 10 to 560 c. WMC put on 10 to 600, with 1.3 million shares traded.
