Farrant stars for Canty B

> An innings of rare quality by David Farrant left Canterbury B in a commanding position at the end of the first day of its three-day national second Xi’s cricket match against Northern Districts B at Ashburton Domain Oval yesterday. Farrant strode to the crease, without a protective helmet, with Canterbury B in the unhealthy position of 15 for two and Neil Pollock extracting plenty of bounce from the pitch and hungry for his third victim. The character of the game changed in the next hour as Farrant belted the short balls to the boundary from Pollock, whipped the fast bowlers away off his legs and ’drove elegantly to anything over-pitched. ‘When spin was introduced in the form of Mark McKinnon's off-breaks, Farrant batted as if he was playing in ;a Sunday social game. In one 'McKinnon over, the first two

balls were dispatched to the boundary, the third over it The second ball went into a swimming pool, the third into the stream encircling the ground. Farrant was fifth dismissed at 138 and he had 87 of them. His 50 came off 59 balls and in 64 minutes and he included 11 fours and three sixes in his majestic innings. Earlier in the day, Canterbury B had dismissed Northern Districts B for 143, the two players dropped from the Northern Shell Trophy side, Lindsay Crocker and Paul Hodder top scoring with 38 each. Andrew Nuttall, a kingpin in Canterbury’s attack, took up where the Canterbury opening bowlers had left off. After Northern was one run for two wickets, Nuttall wove a web around the batsmen with his left-arm spin to claim five inexpensive wickets. At one point he had four for six off .13 overs.
