Upsurge in illegal fishing
PA Napier A tougher economic climate and higher unemployment has led to an upsurge in illegal fishing in Hawke’s Bay, a Ministry of Fisheries spokesman said yesterday. The Napier supervising fisheries officer, Mr Steve Atwill, said some amateur fishermen were breaking the law by selling catches. They were “making a mockery of fish reserves” and damaging fish stocks, particularly stocks of mussels, kina and rock lobster.
He said the Ministry had up to six “significant” investigations into illegal fishing involving fish resources worth thousands of dollars. It was increasing its efforts to catch offenders.
