11 have white Christmas
At least 11 people in New Zealand had a white Christmas yesterday. Very strong winds, poor visibility, and snow trapped climbers in the Mount Cook National Park in their huts.
A senior ranger, Mr Alan Wilson, said that the 10 men and one woman had planned to be in the park for Christmas but that they no doubt hoped to do a little more climbing.
The climbers, in five separate parties, had probably done no climbing since Monday, he said. Snow had been falling since then and in the higher areas of the park poor visibility would have made moving out of the huts dangerous, said Mr Wilson.
Improving weather is forecast for today in the Mount Cook area.
