Escaper found asleep

By

PAT TAYLOR

in Greymouth A man who escaped from custody while being taken to Addington Prison about six weeks ago was recaptured in a cabin in the Kopara village in the Grey Valley yesterday morning. Darryl Robert Fraser, aged 22, was found asleep by a party of Greymouth police and two Christchurch dog handlers and their dogs. Senior-Sergeant Geoff Kenna, of the Greymouth police, said that the police had moved on the cabin at dawn after a tip-off. Constable Andrew Phillips, one of the Christchurch dog handlers, who made the arrest, said that Fraser appeared “almost relieved” and offered no resistance. Fraser was returned to Christchurch yesterday afternoon.

Two other persons were arrested as part of the operation. One, aged 24, will appear in court in January on a charge of possessing cannabis, and another on firearms offences.

Fraser escaped from an escort in a police car in Christchurch on November 13, when he was being moved from an Auckland jail to Addington Prison.
