No general ban on nativity scenes

Most of the country’s kindergartens did not ban nativity scenes this Christmas, says the executive officer of the Free Kindergarten Union, Mrs Bernice Lindegren. Mrs Lindegren was replying to comments by members of the public who were worried that nativity scenes had been banned. The Central North Island Kindergarten Association advised kindergarten teachers in its region not to display nativity scenes in kindergartens this year. Mrs Lindegren said one kindergarten had had complaints from parents last year about the depiction of the nativity scene in a wall poster. To avoid offending’ parents this year, the association felt it was best that no nativity scene should be depicted. Mrs Lindegren said the policy applied only to the central North Island, and did not include other traditional aspects of Christmas, such as telling the Christmas story, or singing Christmas carols. To her knowledge no other regional association had received any complaint from parents, or had any policy regarding nativity scenes.
