Disqualified

NZPA Melbourne Former New Zealand trainer, Jack McGreal, and Australian jockey, Mark Riley, were disqualified for 12 months on improper practice charges after an inquiry at the Victorian Racing Centre on Friday. Owners, Tony Rosolino and Steven Konstatinidis, were also ousted for a year, over the same incident. The disqualifications were the result of an inquiry, led by chief steward, Bill Brewer, into the running of Marcphil in the Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap at Kyneton on December 11. Marcphil, which opened in the betting at 3-1, then firmed to 5-4 before easing to 7-4, missed the start and ran wide on the home turn before finishing second. Evidence was taken throughout the day-log inquiry on Friday and video films of the race were shown to the connections by the stewards. After the long hearing, stewards charged and found Riley guilty of improper practice in that he rode Marcphil in such a manner as not to permit the colt to run on its merits. McGreal, - Rosolino and Konstatinidis were found guilty of the same charge in that they were all a party to Riley’s actions. Immediately after the disqualifications, Riley, McGreal and the owners lodged appeals with the Victorian Racing Club. Riley and McGreal also applied for a stay of proceedings to allow them to continue engagements until a date for the hearing is set. /.
