Lacka Reason works well
Special correspondent Palmerston North Lacka Reason came through his gallop for the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Ellerslie on Friday in fine style at Awapuni yesterday. Trainer Margaret Bull bypassed the Evening Standard Cup and will use the Auckland event as a lead to the Auckland Cup for her stayer. Garry Phillips will go north to ride Lacka Reason. He will be back at Manawatu for the third day on Saturday. Phillips is within one win of his 1000th and it would be fitting if he were to chalk up the four figures at Awapuni, a track which has treated him well in the past. Working today on the plough Lacka Reason and Bronze Valley ran 1400 metres in 1:32, Lacka Reason winning the gallop by a length, running the last 600 in 40s. He did not get the best of runs in the Avondale Cup and the race was not run to suit him. Bronze Valley is well and will race in the open mile on the last day here. Magnitude will also line up on the last day. He was given an easy 1000 yesterday, recording 1:7, the last 600 in 395. He came through his first day race pretty well and could make amends on Saturday. There is a possibility he will go north for the Flag Inns Mile at Ellerslie. Kaierau Prince ran an easy 1200 metres in 1:22.4, the last 600 in 39.45. Working on the course proper Tregenna sprinted from the 1200 metres in 1:18, the last 600 in 395. He is close to his best form and may go to Hastings over the New Year. Severiano, which shows a fair amount of promise, worked from the 800 metres in 50s, the last 600 in 36.65. Four Virtues and Santaray covered 1000 m in 1:8.4, the last 600 in 375. Four Virtues is fit to race here on Friday while Santaray might line up on the second day. Lady Aloof, which looked unlucky not to win on Saturday, sprinted keenly over 600 in 38.45. She is an outstanding mare likely to go one better on the last day here.
