Bill on airline travel

PA Wellington A bill exempting international air carriers from competition provisions of the Commerce Act has been introduced to Parliament. The bill allows Ministerial approval of interline agreements, without which passengers would be unable to buy in advance or subsequently change tickets which allow travel on a number of airlines. the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Prebble, said that the Commerce Act made some basic international aviation conduct unlawful, although it contained transitional provisions to exempt airlines until March 1. A review of the competition regime was now complete, he said, allowing the Civil Aviation Amendment bill to be introduced. The National Party’s associate transport spokesman, Dr A. L. Smith (Kaipara), said the Opposition accepted the need for the bill. It was introduced and referred to the Communications and Road Safety Select Committee.
