Rewi Alley
Sir, —Ken Coates, in Peking, states (December 2) that the autobiography of Rewi Alley is being published by the New World Press. Rewi Alley’s ninetieth birthday will be marked with a function to be attended by top representatives of the Chinese Government, officials and old friends. Christchurch people should know that Rewi attended Wharenui School, where his father was the school’s first principal. Rewi was dux in his Standard 6 year. When Rewi was in Christchurch in the early 1970 s he was invited to open the upgraded Wharenui School library. The event was recorded by television and reporters. It is noteworthy that the Wharenui School library is now open to the public. I would hope that the library becomes known as the “Rewi Alley Library.” This is fitting for a man who has done so much for China, and who has sought neither fame nor gain. — Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. December 19, 1986.
