Christmas

Sir,—As a parent, I would like to. say that I was not at all offended by the fairly low-key attempts by local kindergartens to allow religion to stay in Christmas, and was saddened by the removal of the little nativity scene under the Christmas tree after radio reports that the head office .of the Kindergarten Association had recommended this Christmas has become almost entirely a secular holiday, fostered by commercialism. Double standards prevail; if people are prepared to accept the holiday-and-presents aspect of Christmas, they should also be prepared to ask themselves why they receive these things. Children understand about birthdays; if they cannot be told that Christmas is to celebrate Christ’s birthday, then perhaps we should change the name of the occasion — Santa Claus Day might not express the tradition of the past 2000 years, but it might be a more apt expression of the spirit of the twentieth century. — Yours, etc.,
