Accountant executed for fraud
NZPA-Reuter Beijing An accountant in the Bank of China and two accomplices from the Portuguese - administered territory of Macao have been executed in Zhuhai for smuggling, fraud and embezzlement, the New China News Agency said yesterday. Zhuhai is a special economic zone in the south China province of Guangdong, next to Macao.
The agency said the accountant, who worked in a bank office in Zhuhai, embezzled 2.3 million yuan ($1,209,000) last year, with which he bought 1.47 million Hong Kong dollars ($366,600) on the black market with the aid of an accomplice from Macao.
To escape punishment, the two men forged passports with the aid of “a kingpin of the Macao Mafia” named Li Youqiang, who was also involved in smuggling money, and fraud, the agency said.
