Cyclists help the blind
Two Auckland nurses have raised several thousand dollars for the blind by combining their interest in cycling with a trip home to Christchurch. Ms Winnie Lenihan and Ms Joanne Sutherland, left Auckland 13 days ago by bicycle, and arrived in Christchurch yesterday. Both had intended returning to Christchurch for Christmas, and they decided to raise money on the way for the Homai College for the Blind, South Auckland. Ms Sutherland said she had an interest in the blind because she had a sister at the college.
The two nurses called their trip “bikes in spite of sight” because they
wanted to raise enough money to buy tandem bicycles for the college. After Christmas both cyclists have other journeys to make. Ms Suther-
land will head for marriage and the Lindis Pass, and Ms Lenihan will return to Auckland, by air.
