First tourist house granted a licence
A liquor licence has been granted to the Chatham Islands’ first tourist house.
The house, at Henga, 15km north of Waitangi, provides four double twin rooms with private guest facilities, five guest rooms without private facilities, a dining room and bar lounge. The only other public accommodation on the islands is the hotel at Waitangi. Permission was granted by the Licensing Control Commission on the ground that it would in-
crease the amount and standard of accommodation.
Although the private facilities fell short of the minimum standards, the commission granted dispensation provided the applicants, William and Denise Sutherland, made their intended improvements.
Their wish to provide meals for casual diners required a further permit for special dining if the diners were to use the bar or guest lounge, the commission said.
