Public Notices MACKENZIE COUNTY COUNCIL CLOSED FIRE SEASON PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that under the provisions of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977, the lighting of fires in the open in that part of Mackenzie County which is situated within the Waitakl Catchment Commission’s District, is prohibited from 20 December 1986 until 31 March 1987 or such earlier date as may be notified by .subsequent advertisement. The area concerned is generally to the west of Burkes Pass. The only exception to this notice will be that fires may be lit in the open between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. each day, and that permits will be required during these hours. Any person wishing to light a fire in the open must obtain a permit from their nearest Fire Warden. Fire Wardens will be available for advice and policing duties. Picnic, barbecue and rubbish fires are permitted at any hour during the day provided such fires are in properly constructed containers and provided that all vegetation and combustible material is removed from the ground within three metres of the container. While this order is In force no person shall set on fire or cause to be set on fire in the open air any trees, bracken, gorse, stubble or other plants or debris from forest or land clearing operations or any other combustible materials whatsoever except as set out as above. In all cases the person lighting a fire in a Closed Fire Season shall remain in attendance at the fire until it is fully extinguished. Possession of a permit or lighting a fire within the prohibited hours in no way relieves the person lighting the fire from the full responsibility of keeping the fire under control. Authority to burn as set out above during the permitted hours or following the issue of a written permit is automatically cancelled if the NZ Forest Service invokes Section 20 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 and thereby prohibits the lighting of ALL fires in the open. Such action is normally only taken in extreme conditions and would be at short notice and the prohibition will only apply on the day of notification. Motorists and others are urged to exercise the greatest possible care in the disposal of lighted cigarettes and matches. RURAL FIRE OFFICERS D. J. Allan, Bendrose Station - Twlzel 843 P. A.
