Officials clash over gang

PA Auckland Two prominent local body officials have clashed over behind-the-scenes planning of the Mongrel Mob’s convention last week-end. The chairman of the Auckland Regional Authority’s parks committee, Mr Allan Brewster, told an A.R.A. meeting on Monday evening that the Mayor of Manukau, Mr Barry Curtis, telephoned him a week earlier seeking approval for the gang to use the Mangere park. Mr Brewster added that Mr Curtis had denied such a call was made. “This is totally untrue,” Mr Curtis said. x “I am appalled that he (Mr Brewster) should mislead the public in this

way for the purpose of apportioning blame.” Mr Curtis said the public were well aware that the A.R.A. administered Ambury Park and that the Manukau City Council had limited responsibility during the week-end convention. A written request for the convention was received by the Manukau City Council officers on November 24. The Mayor was told about the proposal on December 1, whereupon he telephoned Mr Brewster. “I take strong exception to Mr Brewster’s statements which not only undermine my integrity and open frankness with the community but also demeans his responsible position in public life.”
