Three star gallopers give Don Couchman a strong hand at Awapuni

Wellington The Hawera trainer, Don Couchman. looks to hold a strong hand in the Selwyn Motors Stakes, which is the feature race, second leg of the T.A.B. double and the first leg of the treble, at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni tomorrow.

The Selwyn is a weight-for-age 1600 m and, as the big summer prizes the Auckland Cup and the New Zealand Derby begin to loom large. Couchman will display his three star gallopers, the Filbert, Red Hawk and The Bishop. Red Hawk comes to Awapuni with wins in the Benson and Hedges Cup and the Canterbury Gold Cup, the latter a weight-for-age 2000 m event. The Filbert, after his third in the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup disappointment, when denied a start at the last minute, has come home and won, in

record time, the Waikato Cup and then continued with a 1600 m success in the Potter at Te Aroha. Now the Auckland Cup beckons.

The Bishop has wins in the Wanganui and Wellington Guineas and then the Bayer Classic. Three-year-olds in-form always look well suited under the weight-for-age scale.

Lomondy, the Melbourne Cup favourite, has his first run since an eighth in the big race, an effort which was better than it looked. Lomondy did, off course, win the Caulfield Cup. Abit Leica won this race last year. This season he has been successful and shared first with Cosmetique at Ellerslie, ran third in the Potter, but then failed last time in the Avondale Cup.

Magnitude was second in this race last year. He has nine wins and three placings from 14 starts at Awapuni and has won seven mile races.
