Productivity talks
Talks are under way between representatives of C. S. Steven’s N.C.F. Kaiapoi meat works and union officials to increase the plant’s killing rate 1350 sheep a day. The works’ processing manager, Mr Brian Ward, said methods being discussed included lengthening the working day and speeding up handling stock on the chain.
Workers would be paid more if they were in an area where productivity increased.
No threat of lay-offs had been made and in some areas extra staff would be hired to cope wjKh the extra output, said Mr Ward.
