Safe sex advice
London NZPA-AP Royalist soldiers followed safe sex advice to stop the spread of venereal disease. Archaeologists at Dudley Castle in the West Midlands have unearthed five 340-year-old condoms used to protect the Civil War Cavaliers from the “pox.” Ms Stephanie Ratkai, project finds supervisor at the dig, said: “Venereal disease could be a killer
in those days. The condoms were not used for family planning. Men tended to use them in extra-marital relationships when they were not sure of their partner.” The condoms, believed to be the oldest found in Britain, date from the 1640 s and were made from fish and animal intestines. They were uncovered in the old castle toilets, preserved by waterlogged ground.
