Commercial refuse issue unresolved
The dispute over charges at Christchurch refuse stations remained unresolved on Thursday after a meeting between commercial rubbish collectors and members of the Metropolitan Refuse Committee. Mr Noel Dick, a spokesman for the commercial collectors who want commercial charges at the stations reduced, said nothing had really been achieved by the meeting. “The Refuse Committee meets again next week so they told us it may be discussed again there,” Mr Dick said. He said the late-queue protest that collectors had
staged last week — of arriving in convoy at the Parkhouse Road station just before closing time — would stop in the meantime. “It does not seem to be achieving anything at this stage,” he said. The commercial collectors will meet again early next week to decide further action. The chairman of the Metro Refuse Committee, Cr Ron Wright, could not be reached for comment last evening, but he has previously said that charges for commercial operators will not come down before the end of the financial year.
